BEFORE YOUR ESTIMATE

A few details help us get it right.

Measure the widest root flare at ground level. If you’re unsure, include a photo with a measuring tape or basketball for scale.

If a stump is inside a fenced or enclosed area, the gate must provide at least 36 inches of clear access width for our equipment.

Tell us about any private utility lines or access concerns near the stump so we can plan the work safely.

HOW TO MEASURE

Measure the flare—not just the cut top.

Correct: Measure at ground level across the widest outside edges of the stump and root flare.

Wrong: Measuring only the narrower saw-cut top understates the stump’s size.

Measure each stump separately. If you’re unsure, send photos and your best estimate; we confirm final measurements onsite.

Optional: On grass or bare soil, outline the requested grinding area with temporary, water-based landscape marking paint or small flags, then measure across its widest points. Do not apply paint to pavement, masonry, fencing, or other finished surfaces.

Why stump size matters: We use a tiered pricing model based on stump size. Grinding area increases much faster than diameter—a stump twice as wide can involve approximately four times the grinding area. Tiered pricing helps us keep smaller and moderate stumps economical while pricing larger, heavier stumps fairly and predictably.

Measure each stump separately. Even when a stump is cut flush, measure at ground level from the widest outside edge of the flare to the opposite outside edge.

Before we arrive.

Make room for access

If a stump is inside a fenced or enclosed area, the gate must provide at least 36 inches of clear access width for our equipment. The entire route to the stump must allow safe equipment travel.

Before we arrive, unlock gates, remove or secure movable items near the access and work areas, secure pets, and tell us about any known access or ground conditions that could affect safe travel. Brown Bear Land Services does not remove fencing or other access barriers.

Identify what’s underground

Any required SC811 clearance must be completed before grinding. We’ll coordinate the locate request and confirm clearance before work begins.

SC811 does not locate every private underground system. The customer must disclose and correctly identify or mark private irrigation, invisible fencing, septic components, landscape lighting, privately installed utility lines, and similar systems near the work area. Brown Bear Land Services is not responsible for damage caused by private systems that are undisclosed, unmarked, or inaccurately marked.

A few common questions.

What affects my estimate?

Stump size, measured at the widest ground-level flare, and stump quantity, excess stump height, access, terrain, steep grade, extended roots, obstructions, and underground utility conflicts affect the work involved. Your location also helps us assess travel and scheduling.

Estimates prepared from customer-provided measurements, photos, and site information assume normal conditions, including no underground facility overlapping or conflicting with the stump or required grinding area unless that conflict is already known.

If the measurements, onsite conditions, or later utility markings differ from the information available when the estimate was prepared, the estimate or scope may be revised before the affected work proceeds. Safety First.

Do you have a minimum service charge?

Yes. Our minimum charge for standard stump-grinding service is $150 within our standard service area. Depending on the property’s location and the size of the job, additional travel charges or a higher minimum may apply if further from our main service area. Any location-related charges will be included in your estimate before scheduling.

Will every root be removed?

Standard service includes the primary stump, its normal root flare, and typical adjoining visible roots within the work area. Stump grinding is not complete root-system excavation, and extended root chasing is included only when specifically quoted.

Will the area be ready for grass or construction?

Not automatically. Standard service leaves grindings onsite, and the area may settle as remaining organic material decomposes. Lawn restoration, planting, fencing or construction may require additional preparation.

What if there is fencing, metal or concrete in the stump?

Disclose known or suspected obstructions. Embedded wire, fencing, concrete, rebar, piping and similar material can limit safe grinding. We grind as close as safely practical, but wood around an obstruction may need to remain.

When can the work be scheduled?

Timing depends on site readiness, required utility clearance, weather and availability. Submitting an estimate request does not reserve an appointment. If access or required preparation is incomplete, a return-trip or mobilization charge may apply.

When is payment due?

Payment is due upon completion and receipt of your invoice. Your estimate identifies the agreed scope; separately requested work must be confirmed before it is performed.

What happens if an underground utility is near the stump?

Before grinding, required utility-locate responses and available markings are reviewed. Because estimates may be prepared before utility locating is completed, they assume no underground facility overlaps or conflicts with the stump or required grinding area unless the conflict is already known. If later utility markings show a conflict, the estimate or scope may be revised. Brown Bear Land Services may also limit the grinding depth, modify the work area, postpone the work until the conflict can be resolved, or decline that stump. Any necessary change will be explained before the affected work proceeds. Safety and utility-clearance requirements take priority over the standard grinding depth.

LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR YARD

Request your stump grinding estimate.

Tell us about your property, the stumps, and any access concerns. We’ll review your request, contact you to confirm the details, and provide an estimate.

If you approve the estimate, we’ll email the Stump Grinding Price Estimate & Work Authorization for acceptance. Once accepted, we’ll arrange any required utility clearance and provide an estimated service window.

Complete the form below, or text photos of the stump(s), property address, and any access concerns 864-416-1339.

For the most accurate estimate, measure each stump at its widest point at ground level, including the root flare. Review our How to Measure guide for instructions. Not sure? That’s okay—photos help, and all measurements are confirmed onsite before work begins.
Please note: Gates must provide at least 36 inches of clear width for equipment access. Use this space to describe any access concerns, including steep or uneven terrain, other obstacles, or anything else you think we should know.
If someone referred you, enter their name or company so we know who sent you our way.
Describe where each stump is located. Example: “Front yard, left of the driveway when facing the house from the street,” or “Backyard beside the shed.” "Roughly 20 feet from front left corner of fence to back yard" If there are multiple stumps, describe each separately. This helps with 811 utility locations.
Examples include things like irrigation, invisible fencing, septic components, landscape lighting, drainage, and privately installed electrical or utility lines. If yes or unsure, explain in the Job Details field.
